Being Tom's wife for over 25 years now, I've had to endure my husbands "passions". Motorcycles, Remote control cars and planes. It seems endless!
We got into buggies as a family back before Christmas 2005 when, Tom decided he would "sneak out" to look for a couple ATV's for him and our boys, Ryan and his older brother Matt, to ride on.
Our family had just moved from Baltimore, MD. and bought a home in the sticks of Southern PA. with access to a couple hundred acres of woods and streams!
Something to ride on out here made sense to Tom but to me, being the ever protective mother, it was visions of hospital trips for all of them! (Ryan was 6, going on 7 at the time)
Tom knew he was going to have to be persuasive because he had a
"Go Big or Go home" mentality even before we met but once we got married, we put a stop to that! :-)
Tom would never put any of us in danger mind you but,.....I could imagine him teaching our boys how to Get Air "properly" or something else equally "stupid" that men just seem to have to do for some reason!
He called me at work one day all excited and in one long breath, pleaded his case. (reminiscent of "Christmas story's" Red rider BB gun plea right before he is gets pushed down Santa's slide)
I have to admit, the roll bars and 4 point safety harness made the idea go down a little easier.
To make a long story short,
We bought our 1st 250cc buggy and fell in love right away! I even had Tom and the boys hauling pieces of slate and ornamental rocks from the nearby river for our garden! (Win/Win!)
By the end of the following year, our oldest son Matt, moved from home and started his adventure into adulthood and Ryan was just turning 8.
Tom and Ryan started spending more time together, working and playing with our buggy.
After filming the two of them working in the garage one day, I showed the video clip to Tom.
Ryan was glued to what his dad was saying and Tom was just glowing with pride!
After the video was over, he looked at me (with that blank stare he gets that tells me I'm in trouble) and I could see the wheels were turning again! What have I done? :-)
It didn't take long before they were modifying our buggy and filming the process.
(They snuck around for weeks because they knew I wouldn't go for any of Tom's "modifications" to make it faster).
Since there weren't any performance parts available for buggies at the time, they had to "improvise". This led to mistakes being made in the process of learning and it now required money to fix which I, held the bank book.....! :-)
After a good scolding, we bought the parts they needed and they were up and running in a couple days however, the information and parts they were given to fix our buggy was incorrect and now, the engine was "screaming" and revving very high.
Tom was beside himself! He knew I wasn't going to let them spend any more money on that buggy so soon. I saw those darn wheels turning again!
Next thing I know, we have a huge shop down the road from us with a dozen new buggies sitting in crates in the middle of the floor! (MEN!)
I'm still not sure how he pulled it off but when Tom gets an idea in his head...
Toms nick name on the forums he frequented, was "Kid In Me" because when he was driving our buggy, he was like a kid in it! When he and Ryan introduced me to this "Business" idea of theirs, they decided to call our new business, Kid N Me to reflect the fact that it was Tom and our son Ryan but also, when people see what the mini buggy is all about, they are going to say "Are you kidding me?" and they'll think of us!
Because we couldn't get accurate information on the internet or from any dealers we talked to, we decided to learn it ourselves then teach it to everyone else.
If you know what you need any why, you won't have to deal with the same issues we had and dealers can't fool you any more.
It was the hard way to go but it also built a strong foundation to build on.
After playing in the garage and testing all sorts of "Part adjustments", Tom and Ryan came up with their 1st performance part idea! The Dual Ramp variator (DR2) and the rest is history. KidNme performance was born and shortly after, our show "KidNme Garage", which showcases how to modify and repair your buggy yourself!
Now the whole family pitches in with running the business and we couldn't be happier! We meet so many nice people at the rallies we go to and the people Tom deals with that I can see this being a family business for several generations!
We hope you find your imported scooter or mini buggy experience a positive one and hope that our passion spreads to you!
If KidNme can do anything help, please let us know because this is why we started this whole darn thing in the 1st place!
We know what it's like. We're your "friend in the business" & we won't steer you wrong!
Enjoy the site and videos!
